Hippotherapy is a treatment tool used within physiotherapy which utilises equine movement to provide carefully graded motor and sensory input to promote functional outcomes.
The movement that the horse provides mimics the movement of the human pelvis when walking. When a client is seated on a horse they must use their muscles to remain upright and balanced.
When walking the horse’s legs move at 95 to 110 repetitions per minute. This provides the client with high repetitions of rhythmic movement with changes in speed, direction and amplitude.
Hippotherapy is suitable for children and adults with goals working towards ambulation, balance and falls prevention, righting reactions, gross motor skills, upper limb function and postural control.
Hippotherapy is suitable for diagnosis including but not limited to:

Hippotherapy would not be possible without the amazing team at Brook Valley Farm (RDA Bullsbrook).
Each session requires an RDA coach, horse handler, and two side walkers who volunteer to support our clients to achieve their goals.
The horse is the most important member of our team!
Each horse or pony strides differently and has a unique shape. We match clients with the horse or pony most suited to target their mobility goals.
